About Strength defence

Building confidence from the inside out

SD holiday club.jpeg

Hi, I’m John and i'm the owner and founder of strength defence

I’ve spent more than 25 years training in karate and over 15 years teaching children, teenagers and adults.

I’m a 4th Dan in Goju-Ryu karate, and over the years I’ve become increasingly interested in a simple question:

What actually helps an ordinary person feel safer and more confident in the real world?

That question eventually led me to develop Strength Defence.

Rather than teaching people how to fight, I wanted to concentrate on practical self-protection: awareness, communication, movement, protecting your space and having simple options when something goes wrong.

For me, strength defence is about doing something I genuinely enjoy and sharing the things I’ve learned and become passionate about over the years.

if I’m helping someone become more confident in protecting themselves, I love seeing people gain confidence, learn something new and perhaps look at themselves or the world around them a little differently.

Strength defence feels like a natural next chapter for me — bringing together years of teaching, martial arts and a passion to help people.

I want to keep learning, keep developing what I do and, most importantly, enjoy sharing it with others.

If someone comes away from an experience with me feeling a little more confident, curious or inspired than when they arrived, then I feel I’ve achieved something worthwhile.
